There are now few subjects that interest me more than those related to worship and praise. I have a number of books on the subject and I am reading two or three of these books.
My interest in the question comes from the awareness of changes in my church and of the choices made.
Some find me too conservative, others argue that it is a matter of taste. Do not think that on this issue I think it's all a matter of taste or opinion, I think there are clear principles in the Word that indicate that not everything is left to the taste of each one.
Clarifying:
-Is it the same to have believers or non believers in the team of praise? Or as Tozer put it, do we believe that only the believer worships.
-personally, the style does not bother me, I have found authors who distrust of certain instruments, i don´t find a problem with that.
-But if the style is almost always secondary (still reflecting what is played and how it changes it), the content is not, at least for me. I feel that we are often little more than singing mantras, small short phrases with almost no theological content, for most of our meetings.
-praise is the central part of our cults? How long lasts the praise and how long the preaching, reading of the word and prayer?
-would we be able to be in a church without praise? Would in a church without preaching? These questions seems to be stupid questions, but i´ve heard "stupid" answers, so... i asked them anyway.
-are the excitement and "encounters with God" that some have through praise/worship Biblical? What is worship´s aim? What is praise and worship?
-How many sermons we´ve heard about praise and/or worship? I have been taught how to practice these two areas in my Christian life? Has my pastor (or yours) already preached about principles related to these two areas?
-I feel that sometimes there are fewer problems in discussing theological issues, even in a tough way, but that there is a fearful care when discussin worship and praise.
-should the worship leader (and the worship team) have theological preparation? Or should they be only good musicians?
-There should be communication between the worship team and the pastor or preacher? Should they be careful on the choices made, taking into account the message that will be preached?
-What´s community´s role? Many times I'm in the Congregation and i don´t hear them singing, I'm not listening to the congregation to sing, but only the worship team. Is it good or an error?
- How many times I have read the lyrics on screen and i see misspellings, punctuation errors? Are these minor things?
These are some of the issues that lead me to think about this and read books on this subject. I confess that i don´t always agree with the assumptions and conclusions of those who seem to be on "my side". This just shows how we are different and how these two issues stir us.
So, Yes, some of the readings will be on praise and worship, the next book that'll comment here is about just that.
Until tomorrow.
